No aggregated feed at the moment

As Abi Rhodes pointed out, the aggregated feed was permanently displaying some posts from July. I've been and had a look at the source site - blogdigger - and the other feeds I checked were also stuck in July. So, for the time being there is no aggregation going on. I'll try and find an alternative provider, but if you know of anything I could do, drop me a line.

Thanks!

We love local!

I received the following email, so thought I'd share it.

Hi Brightonbloggers.com,

I came across your website whilst browsing for Brighton related websites and thought your website was great. I was wondering whether you would consider listing the following section of WeLoveLocal.com which lets people read reviews and recommendations and view Brighton businesses on a large map.

http://www.welovelocal.com/en/se/brighton-and-hove/brighton/

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards.

Survey request

I got an email a while ago (quite a while ago in fact, sorry Anthony) which said

"I'm one of the Brighton bloggers (at IslingwordStreet.com) but also work with a small non-profit called the Democratic Society. We exist to promote participation and democracy, and are going to be holding a discussion event in Brighton in the next couple of months. The topic of the discussion is not decided yet, there's a survey at

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=gQVcBe50yfQUF2xvKFBVzA_3d_3d

which will help us decide what people would be interested in hearing about.

Would it be possible to make a mention of this survey on the Brighton Bloggers site, so we can get some views from the local blogosphere?"

So, here it is...

Hope you don't mind this request, but we have an especially important item on our Bulletin page at the moment.

Unique to Brighton specialist independent food outlets and shops

It’s a Federation of Small Business petition to support local shops - which we are very keen to support too!

If you know anyone who might be interested in mentioning this on their blog, do please pass it on.

We got a mention in the Guardian yesterday, the article Mapping Britain's blogosphere includes a section about Brighton, including Brighton Bloggers.

I was also interviewed by Vicky at Rocks magazine yesterday for an article to appear in the next few days. I'll add a link to that when it is published.

Apologies for the many emails I've received in the last month about new blogs to be added - there is quite a backlog and I'll plough through them all in January.

Brighton Bloggers Meetup

We had a great meetup on Thursday, with probably 14 - 15 bloggers in attendance. Lots of chatting and drinking, and a round table discussion about what we blog about and why are we driven to do it - quite an interesting insight with a mixture of people blogging to remember, blogging to share and blogging to connect with people who may have similar interests.

Blogs represened were:

Frances, with Anna and Bobbie in the background

Brighton Bloggers Graph

At the last meetup I produced an image containing the front page of all blogs. This time Richard produced a graph of the increase in blog numbers over the year.

He says "It was calculated by looking at the number of blog links
from the pages stored in the wayback machine, via two little
Groovy scripts I knocked up. Then thrown into NeoOffice and
Numbers."

Blog roll and photos of the meetup to follow.

Rocks - Request for bloggers

Further to the mention of Brighton Bloggers in Rocks, and my subsequent blogging of it I've had an email from Sarah from Rocks Magazine who says:

I was wondering if you could help me: I’m looking for people to blog on the Rocks website and I’m having a hard time finding anyone. I want people who are doing interesting projects, involved with well known groups or can talk about life in Brighton. Is there any chance you could post that I am searching for people on Brighton Bloggers? Or do you know anyone who could blog on the site?

I'm going to point Sarah at this blog entry, so if you're interested, add a comment and I hope she'll spot it and follow up on it.

Brighton Bloggers - 279 pages

On Monday evening, in preparation for this evening meetup, I ran a script to take a screen shot of all of the Brighton Bloggers sites. These were then pulled together into one big image. I had an A3 and an A2 version with me this evening in the pub and they certainly elicited some interest.

The original, full size image, can be seen here (it's too big for flickr).

Adding a blog?
Hi Jane, I'm sorry, i didn't know how to get in touch with you directly so i thought i'd leave you a comment. I've got a new blog based around Sussex and Brighton (www.flowerhunt.blogspot.com). I'm on a hunt for all the different flowers you can find in this area and uploading a photograph of a new flower to my blog each day... which keeps me busy. I'd love it if you could add me to the list of Brighton blogs. Cheers

Search

Another change to the site this evening, there is now a search box on the right hand side of each page on the site. This allows you to search across all Brighton Blogs and is powered by Google Coop. The search has been active since December but you used to have to go to a separate page. Hopefully, now it is on every page it will be more useful - this was also part of Rosie's feedback when I asked for comments earlier this year - so I did listen and take it on board, it has just taken a while :-)

DieppeBloggers

I received the following email the other day:
"Dear Editor of Brightonbloggers,

Would you please add my (main) blog as I'm based in Dieppe (Normandie) and wish to develop exchanges of news between people in both cities? Jyvais

Thank you for reading me, excuse my poor english.

I haven't added JV to the list as Dieppe is a long way from Brighton - and there has always been debate as to whether people from Worthing should be added :-) - but, if anyone wants to submit their blog to the (fr)english blogs & friends section then just follow the Ajouter votre site link.

Site re-think?

The time has come where I need to think about writing an administration system for this site. When BrightonBloggers first started, there were about 25 blogs, and new ones trickled through at one or two every few months. At the moment, the list of blogs is handwritten HTML, and updates are taking too long - the only automated aspect is the comment system which is a reuse of the PHP/mySQL system I crafted for my blog. I currently have another 13 blogs waiting to be added. Just to help you get the picture of the current process, currently, every time I add a blog I do the following:
  • Update the blogs page
  • Create a "New blogs" blog entry
  • Add the blog to the rss aggregator
  • Add the link to google coop to power the search
  • Add the blog owner to the mailing list
  • Email the blog owner to let them know that they are added
  • Refresh the OPML file

Jonathan emailed me with some suggestions a while ago, which was much appreciated. His suggestions were:
  • categorisation of blogs - personal, technical, commercial etc
  • pruning of dead blogs

So, feedback I'd like (in the comments will do fine) is:
  • What do you look for when you view the blogs link page?
  • Would categorisation be useful?
  • Do you ever use the search?
  • Would you be interested in being able to get hold of the rss feed for a blog as well as a normal url?
  • Does anyone use the opml file to subscribe to all (rss-enabled) brighton blogs?
  • Does anyone (other than me) subscribe to the aggregated rss feed?

Of course, any other feedback would be fantastic too :-)

Labels: ,

feedback
I look for blogs that might interest me, especially new blogs.
I think categorisation would be good although there might just be a butt ton of 'general' blogs?
I've never used the search
I would go and read the blog to see if I liked it before getting the rss, so i'd get that from the blog itself.
I fon't use or need any of the eeds offered

categorisation?
I enjoy the Brighton Bloggers feed, and it's worth seeing everything as it's finding the unusual ones that is interesting.

categorisation?....user-added tagging surely, we _are _ Web 2.0 don't you know!

I'm surprised that this system doesn't already exist. I take it that you've had a good search around...or maybe the Brighton Bloggers can do some searching?

Rosie's feedback
Didn't realise RSS feeds existed :)

Never used the search, but always a good thing to have. Perhaps making it more visible - always visible rather than a link to a page with search.

Tagging is a must per blog entry :)

The list is quite long at the moment, and I personally can't see myself (as a new or frequent visitor) going through all the blogs just to see what they are about.

If you want to be fancy, you could create a rating system.

feedback
The site ould do with a little bit of an introduction to interesting or entertaining blogs. Maybe ask a few Brighton bloggers to guest post or just talk about ones that catch your attention.
// posted by Laura @ 2007-03-29 19:34:17

- RSS feeds for each blog would be good
- a general RSS feed of blogs (where I get notified of new additions to the list)
- a search filed in the header of every page
- alternative views of the list based on posting frequency, popularity etc would be nice

Have you given any thought to aggregating other stuff like local Flickrers etc?
// posted by Danny Hope @ 2007-03-29 19:56:55

It might be a good idea to present your ideas at the next meetup and then people could give you direct feedback.
// posted by Danny Hope @ 2007-03-29 20:01:58

I didn't know about the aggregated feed but I shall subscribe to it now.
It'd be nice to have the RSS address but, yeah, as someone says above, I could probably find it for myself.

I am one of the 'dead' blogs in that my blog has gone entirely friends only, so do feel free to remove me if you'd like to.

It sounds like you could use a little help with the admin. Is this a job you could ask for volunteers that you could delegate to?

Twitters
You start creating a list of twitters :)
// posted by Rosie Sherry @ 2007-03-30 10:24:28

Feedback
I can't say I use the blogs link page very much
Categorisation: yes, probably necessary now it's big...
Have never used search
Feeds: not really necessary, as most things I use (ie NetNewsWire) can auto-discover the feed from the main URL
I used the OPML file once
I do use the aggregated feed.
A thought: if you want to reduce the size you could kick Seafordians, Shorehamites, etc out and reserve it for those within the administrative boundaries of B & H
// posted by Tom @ 2007-03-30 13:00:00

Not that I'm in favour of that last option, since I live in Seaford myself, but sometimes write about Brighton-ish things, for reasons that will be clear to anyone who has visited Seaford, that is that there is nothing to write about apart from the fights outside the pubs
// posted by Tom @ 2007-03-30 14:14:07

Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback - some more food for thought. Like Rosie's twitter idea. Maybe a broad categorisation at the top level - blog, podcast, twitter, with 2nd level done as tags. Who gets to tag a blog - the owner? anyone? does some filtering need to be done to stop abusive tagging?

Anyone have any thoughts about geotagging blogs so we can have a big Brighton Bloggers map as well - or is that too intrusive? Obviously the blog owner would have to supply their post code/latitude longitude in the first place so they can opt out...
// posted by Jane @ 2007-03-31 10:37:13

enhancements
Could we have a list of blogs sorted by date added so we can see the latest.
// posted by chilli cheese @ 2007-03-31 13:39:20

Feedback
I don't use the feeds or the search functions either.

I do like to browse through the blogs - I think some kind of categorisation would be useful, whether this done by Tags, or by the user providing a short description.

I also think pruning the 'dead' blogs is a good idea.
// posted by soulmining @ 2007-04-02 11:22:10

It might be nice to show a second column on the homepage containing the latest posts to all of these blogs.

Another thing that occours to me: the way I /really/ use the site is as a promotional tool, ie.

I came to the site once because I wanted to get my site listed.

With this in mind perhaps it would be a good idea to offer people advice on other ways to do this.
// posted by Danny Hope @ 2007-04-02 16:32:04

feedback
I don't use much functionality.
I like the idea of categorisation - even if its by user tagging.
I also like the idea of showing the blogs by the date that they last updated pages, not sure if that is possible. I like the idea of a rating system.
Pruning dead blogs - definately. Maybe prune all the ones that haven't had a post in the last 6 months?
// posted by Brightonpubs @ 2007-04-03 12:17:17

usage
I do use the aggregated rss feed, though there's a lot on it and i think i'll have to stop cos it's way too much, but helpful as an intro to get the lay of the land.

It's my hammer and so I see everything as a nail, but if you're thinking of adding some power to the site, ExpressionEngine Core (free) would work just fine.

Meetup - 23rd January

Meetup

Well we had the meetup last night, and it was a great success - somewhere in the region of 30 bloggers turned up, some familiar faces, some new people. I received details of some new blogs, as well as some deceased ones. So I'll make the changes and update the list when I get a moment. I'll also specify how many bloggers we now have on the site as this was a question I got last night.

I've created a Brighton Bloggers Meetup group on flickr, so if anyone has any photos to add, please do so.

The blog roll of attendees is (in no real order):

glennjones.net
Rellygious Teachings
idigit design blog
2B or not 2B - WHAT is the question?
Abi Rhodes' Zigzag Wanderings
Adactio
Aloe Vera for health and beauty
Assistant
Blogging for Blaker's
Business Bricks
Callender Creates
Created Metaphors
Eventyr
Go 5 Ways
Jabbering Giraffe
Jane's work stuff
Jane and Richard's Yak and Natter
Jayonline Webdev Blog
Nice Design
No Ta - NONE OF THE ABOVE
Spin Doctors Mobile Disco
tenpastmidnight
Typing: An Unavoidable Consequence of Bad Handwriting
WordRidden
Yandleblog
Simon's Software stuff
Fluct.isono.us
Social Networking Software | Web 2 Interact

There are still some more to add, but blogger was having a bad day today so I didn't get a chance to update the list with the new additions... Feel free to add yourself as a link in the comments, I'll update this blog with the extra information when I get a chance.

Thanks to the Black Horse for recovering well considering that they didn't have a record of our booking - all things considered they recovered excellently and provided a good buffet which we certainly seemed to demolish effectively!

Thanks for attending guys and making the event such a success, I'll organise another one in another few months so watch this space.

Google Search

Thanks to Paul Silver for some consultancy we've now got a search facility through Google Co-op.

Every one of the registered brighton blogs has been registered, and a search via the new search page will check through all of our registered sites.

I've also created an adsense account to make the most of the adverts which will appear on the search - and I'll probably put them on to the blog at some point as well. Hopefully it'll make enough money to pay for hosting, and perhaps some beers at the meetups.

What happens next?
What normally happens with location is we find somewhere that is free :-) It doesn't have to be particularly large as at past meetups we've been between 10 and 20 people. Previous meetups have been at the Earth and Star, Grand Central, Riki Tik, Black Lion and even the Hanbury Ballroom.

I figured I'd give everyone till the end of the week to show an interest, and chose a date, and then we can get a date and a room booked.

google homepage
hey there Jane,

You 'blog of blogs' (if that's what it is) looks really handy, good job there.

Can you help me add it to the goolge homepage? I tried pasting http://www.brightonbloggers.com/blog/ into google and http://www.brightonbloggers.com/brighton.opml but neither worked.

I have to confess that I don't really know how the google personalised homepage works, but so far I've managed to add a few rss feeds by just ctuuing and pasting into the "add by url" box.

What do you think I should be doing?

You're a star, a certifyable, bona-fide wizard. Thank you. The atom page appears on google (no content yet, but I assume some will come up as new items appear in the feed.
Can I suggest that you submit your feed to the google personalised homepage menu +/- stick a ghoogle button on your site - I know you've probably thought about it before, but more and more poeple I know are using google personalised homepages.
The other thing I'm going to ask you is whether you know any good feeds of Brighton events listings - mostly music/ comdey but a full house of arts and theatre too would be welcome.

Stopping the spam
Hi Jane, I'm not sure if you're using the standard Blogger comments system or an add-on. If it's the Blogger one you can go in to Setting -> Comments, then choose 'Show word verification for comments' and it'll add in one of those captcha thingies where you have to type in letters from an image when you reply. This seems to cut out 99% of blog spam.

Thanks Paul
Unfortunately the comment system is home grown - which means I need to find some time to put some moderation in place... It is on my to do list, and with the amount of spam I'm deleting at the moment, its getting closer up that list :-)

All comments now have to be authorised before they get displayed. So, hopefully, that will be the end of those posts.

Thanks for your patience.

Its that time of year again - Brighton and Hove Web Awards. Last year, 2 Brighton Bloggers won awards - Best Personal Sites and Weblogs went to Assistant and the Humanity Accesibility Award went to Adactio (our designer here at BrightonBloggers).

The categories this year are Best Local Arts and Music Site, Best Business Site, Best Sites for Nights Out, Best Community Site and Best Personal Sites and Weblogs. You can nominate your site or any other for that matter.

Additionally, judges are needed to help judge the awards - want to volunteer?
